* split into three parts for your Usenet viewing pleasure! *
=== PART THE FIRST ===
This version *supersedes* previous "editions"; they may safely be deleted
without loss of important information.
Thiis is not a definitive or exhaustive guide to anything; in fact, despite
the name, a lot of this isn't even so "weird". Arguably, the really weird
stuff is swamped in a list of marginally interesting but still useful
ordinary resources; so browse, and read the contents list carefully.
Parts of this document have been adapted or taken from Usenet articles,
fringe-blurbs circulating by email, other net-resource guides, etc. Thanks to
all those info sources. Many of the resources mentioned I have not seen; if I
ever have the time and resources to inspect everything here myself, most
likely I will; in fact for me this document functions in part as a list of
"things I must have a look at one day". At present, however, it's something
of a struggle just to get this posted.
Topics covered in Part I are:
BELIEF SYSTEMS
- "ordinary" and "offbeat" religions and spirituality
- paganism and magick, occultism, satanism
- weird religions
- the New Age and the Flat Earth
UFOS AND PARANORMAL PHENOMENA
UNIQUE INDIVIDUALS
PHILOSOPHY, THINKING ABOUT THINKING, ETC
SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (including EXTROPIANS)
WEIRD SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
ETEXT AND ART PROJECTS, ETC

*complete* texts of the Book of Lies, Book of the Law, Book 4,
Magick in Theory and Practice, Magick Without Tears, and some

[Back to me:]
Also worth perusing are wilson.on.cis, an online conference with RAWilson as
guest participant, and cybercraft, which contains an exposition of Leary's
8-circuit model. ALSO, copies of the Equinox are retailing where I live
for about $700 (for 10 vols.) at present. You could probably make yourself
same money, and do yourself a favor, and violate some sort of copyright law
by printing copies of the Equinox based on the slopoke material.

In Robert Anton Wilson's _Illuminatus! Trilogy_, he describes
a process used by Discordians, Erisians and Anarchists against
governments, corporations and in general, The Establishment.
This process involves sending many letters from different
parts of the country/world and is called Operation Mindfuck.
With the advent of e-mail, Operation Mindfucks are much more
easily coordinated. One such network can be joined by e-mailing
corleyj@gas.uug.arizona.edu. Networks are set up around
communal responsibility. Everyone agrees to participate in
everyone else's Mindfuck. If A helps B Fuck the IRS, then when
B wants to Fuck the Department of Defense, A is obliged to help.

FTP SITES
o The ftp site at life.anu.edu.au, in /pub/complex_systems which is further
subdivided into stuff like Alife, CA, Neural Nets etc.
o The UCLA ftp site at cognet.ucla.edu in /pub/alife with a fairly extensive
Alife bibliography.
o The ftp site at funic.funet,fi , in pub/sci, which, its maintainers claim,
is the largest ftp site in the world in all subjects ... it has stuff on Neural
Nets, Neurophysiology, Artificial Intelligence and lots of other such
subjects. A really useful file to look at before anything else is the
file '00INDEX' in the directory pub/sci/neural.
o The ftp site at ftp.cogs.susx.ac.uk, in /pub/reports/csrp : a whole bunch of
PostScript files containing god-knows-what.
o The ftp site at xyz.lanl.gov in /nlin-sys : this contains preprints of
various papers under the same headings as given later on in this document for
the *Nonlinear Science Bulletin Board*.
o The Xerox PARC site at parcftp.xerox.com, in /pub/dynamics,has some papers
on the evolution of cooperative behaviour.
o The Santa Fe Institute has an ftp site at ftp.santafe.edu, in /pub/Alife.
... the Alife part is kind of disappointing, with the only worthwhile thing
there being Tierra. The GA subdirectory /pub/GA/source has a few GA simulators,
and the pub/Users/mm subdirectory has some interesting papers on CA.
o An archive of genetic programming is at ftp.cc.utexas.edu, in
/pub/genetic-programming.
SPECIFIC PROGRAMS/PAPERS
o ftp to life.anu.edu.au, in /complex_systems/alife/tierra. TIERRA, Tom Ray's
amazingly neat digital ecology simulator can be found in a variety of places;
however, the only place that seems to have the paper describing the results of
Tierra is life.anu.edu.au. The paper is called tierra.ps.
o ftp to ftp.apple.com, in /pub/polyworld. POLYWORLD , another neat simulator,
complete with C++ source code written to run on a SILICON GRAPHICS machine and
technical paper describing polyworld. README file has more info.
o ftp to funic.funet.fi, in /pub/sci/neural/genesis. GENESIS : this is a
program for Neural Network simulation, runs on X11 platforms and is supposed to
have rather good graphics.
o ftp to funic.funet.fi, in /pub/sci/neural/cellsim. CELLSIM, a cellular
automata simulator.
o ftp to funic.funet.fi, in /pub/sci/neural/SNNS. SNNS, a neural network
simulator written at the University of Stuttgart, Germany.
o ftp to life.anu.edu.au, in /pub/complex_systems/alife/life. Game of Life:
there are various Life forms for PCs and UNIX. Files ending in
..zip are for PCs.
o ftp to life.anu.edu.au, in /pub/complex_systems/alife. BUGWORLD simulates a
bug-ecology, with predators and all. File is called bugworld.tar.Z.
o ftp to life.anu.edu.au, in /pub/complex_systems/alife. L-systems : Aristid
Lindemeyer's L-systems can be used for various neat things, like growing
natural-looking plants out of very simple rules. The file is called
lsys.tar.Z.
o ftp to life.anu.edu.au, in /pub/complex_systems/alife. Biomorphs: I have a
strong feeling that this is Richard Dawkins' program that simulates evolution
of what he calls 'biomorphs'; evolutionary pressure is towards critters that
look interesting. Unfortunately, it looks like this file is for PCs'; it's
called biomrf.zip

NEBULA is now online. You can now receive our mail-order catalog of
books and magazines via the Internet. Our catalog contains reviews from the
store's staff and ordering information, indexed by categories. The
catalog can be accessed in one of two ways:
GOPHER
------
If you have gopher access, the catalog can also be obtained from The
WELL's gopher, under the "Business in Cyberspace" menu.
E-MAIL
------
mail nebula@cam.org with the subject heading, "catalog". If you have
access to compression tools, we can send you a compressed and uuencoded
catalog; the three formats we support are ZIP, LHA, and UNIX compress.
For these, send us mail with a subject heading of "catalog-zip",
"catalog-lha", or "catalog-z", respectively.
ftp - wiretap.spies.com
most of the books are kept in /Library/Classic and /Library/Religion
a list of book reviews may be obtained with
$ finger 'books%danny@orthanc.cs.su.oz.au'
and individual reviews extracted similarly
$ finger 'books=Title_From_Index%danny@orthanc.cs.su.oz.au'
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Comments on my reviews are always welcome. Criticism of any kind
is particularly appreciated - anything from pointing out spelling
mistakes to disagreement with the basic assumptions of the review.

amixinfo@markets.amix.com - amix is american information exchange - they
are apparently an online information market (!?)
- after the last Hwbemail was posted to Usenet the full Amixinfo blurb was
posted, here are some excerpts:
AMIX, the American Information Exchange, is something completely new --
an online Information Marketplace (R). On AMIX, anyone can both buy and
_sell_ documents, software, or anything that can be stored digitally.
Those who buy or sell customized information can carry out consulting
contracts, even very small ones, easily and profitably. AMIX handles all
the funds transfer automatically.
This Information Marketplace has been open for business continuously since
January 1, 1992. Consulting contracts are being made and fulfilled;
document sales are occurring on a daily basis in key markets; and information
providers continue to "stock the shelves" with new goods in all markets.
The AMIX software allows customers to explore the system online with guest
access, and to register their own account online to receive full access.
Customers who open their accounts now will have their monthly fees waived
for the month in which they sign up and for the following month.
To receive the AMIX software disk, enabling guest exploration of the system
and self-registration, contact AMIX by email at amixinfo@markets.amix.com
or by phone (415) 903-1015.
What follows is an overview of AMIX: its concepts, structure, and function;
the market-building phase; and advantages of early entry into the market.
[but i wont include this..]
AMIX, AMIX Service, Information Marketplace, and Information Markets are
trademarks of the American Information Exchange Corporation. All other
product, brand, or company names are trademarks of their respective holders.

-------------------url-------------------------------
URL stands for an Uniform Resource Locator, and is the upcoming
Internet standard on how to specify path to various resources
(files or named parts of files) in the form of a single string,
which can then be used as an argument in commands fed to shells
that understand its syntax. The whole of the WorldWideWeb revolves
around use of URLs, but the syntax encompasses also gopher, afs,
wais, ftp and ALL other type of accesses. The URL syntax is des-
cribed in
http://info.cern.ch/pub/www/doc/url7a.txt
(around 47KB), and you can have it sent to you by mailing
a message
To: listserv@info.cern.ch
with the following commands:
www http://info.cern.ch/pub/www/doc/url7a.txt
end
PS. There is also a PostScript version of the same at the same
location; change trailing ".txt" to ".ps" for that. The same
directory also holds a
http://info.cern.ch/pub/www/doc/html-spec.txt
(around 83KB), which is a fairly comprehensive description
of the HTML syntax used in the WWW.

Subject: Seeking kibitzers for encryption idea
Date: Wed, 9 Mar 1994 23:04:14 GMT
I thought up an interesting possible encryption scheme, that should lend
itself to easy, cheap hardware implementation (a possible competitor for
Clipper) but I don't know enough about cryptanalysis to determine whether
it is secure. Anybody interested in taking a whack at it? You can get the
text description, C source, and MS-DOS executable by ftping onto
ftp.std.com and looking in the /ftp/pub/wware directory. I am a much better
logic designer than cryptanalyst, and it was designed to be painlessly
implementable with off-the-shelf programmable logic devices (e.g. Xilinx).
Any comments or suggestions are welcome; I am at <wware.std.com>. Thanks!

PGP Public Keyservers
---------------------
There are PGP public key servers which allow one to exchange public
keys running through the Internet and UUCP mail systems.
This service is NOT supported in any way whatsoever by the schools or
organizations on which these servers run. It is here only to help
transfer keys between PGP users. It does NOT attempt to guarantee
that a key is a valid key; use the signators on a key for that kind of
security. This service can be discontinued at any time without prior
notification.
Each keyserver processes requests in the form of mail messages. The
commands for the server are entered on the Subject: line.
To: pgp-public-keys@io.com
From: johndoe@some.site.edu
Subject: help
Sending your key to ONE server is enough. After it processes your
key, it will forward your add request to other servers automagically.
For example, to add your key to the keyserver, or to update your key if it is
already there, send a message similar to the following to any server:
To: pgp-public-keys@io.com
From: johndoe@some.site.edu
Subject: add

indie list
>Ah...! It's a weekly digest devoted to "indie" music - that is
>(generally) music found outside the corporate mainstream on small
>independent labels. Good source of info for that kinda of stuff,
>and a very loose editorial policy (no flames, try to keep stuff
>relevant to music, and mention major-label bands as little as
>possible).
> To subscribe, contact Liz Clayton at lclayton@uhuru.uchicago.edu .

*** RAVES ***
(mostly from alt.rave FAQ - none seen by me)
there is supposed to be a virtual rave, telnet sfraves.berkeley.edu 7283 I
think. havent seen it.
sfraves is apparently the biggie, subscribed to by people as diverse as TOPY
and the DEA.

Minnesota rave list - mail ivan@staff.tc.umn.edu for details
UMD-centric list - mail cyberpun@wam.umd.edu
Purpose: SFRaves is about the "rave" club scene in San Francisco.
Even though it's locally focused, people from all over the world
are on SFRaves. It is an unmoderated list.
Purpose: The NERaves list was started as a North Eastern United
States/Canada equivalent of SFRaves. The list provides a forum
for people to discuss the "rave" music/club/dance scene. For the
purposes of the list, "North Eastern" is loosely defined as from
Chicago --> East and from Washington DC --> North, including
Ontario, Quebec, and the Mritime Provinces. People from outside
this area are welcome, too! NERaves is an unmoderated list.
NetJam
Contact: netjam-request@xcf.berkeley.edu) Craig Latta
Purpose: NetJam provides a means for people to collaborate on musical
compositions, by sending Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI)
and other files (such as MAX patchers and notated scores) to each
other, mucking about with them, and resending them. All those with
MIDI-compatible (and other interesting) equipment, access to emailing
and compression facilities and to the Internet and who are interested
in making music are encouraged to participate.
Please email netjam-request@xcf.berkeley.edu with the subject line
"request for info".

... a group of ex-hackers/phreaks have
been working to recover messages from underground BBS systems from boards
that were online in the 1980's decade. It was profiled in CuD Issue #5.39
and recently reviewed in the Autumn issue of 2600.
The file that contains all the details is about 35 KB in length and
therefore hesitate in posting it to this list. If people want the info
file posted to the list, just say so. Otherwise, you can obtain more
information via the Mindvox Gopher Server, choose menu item #5 for the
LOD Communications information menu. Note that the CuD 5.39 review issue
is on there also. Emailing this account will put you on our mailing list
